Jean Bassett What is the Spiritualist National Union? How and why was it formed? Who were the pioneers?
It is rare in the history of humanity for a religion to grow out of the interest and desire of the people rather than from the charismatic influence of one individual with revelations to perpetuate. It is also rare to find any religious body which does not believe and preach that they alone have access to the "truth" and thus access to eternal bliss; who do not believe in attempting to bribe and/or corrupt their God through sacrifice, ritual or flattery; who do not elevate their priests above the people. The Spiritualists' National Union stands, not alone but certainly lonely, within the ranks of that rarity. It grew from the need of separate groups to formalise and strengthen their structure, from the need of individuals to come together with those of like-mind and yet still be left with the freedom to think for themselves. The struggle to come together as a national organisation is described simply and graphically in this book. The Spiritualists' National Union is in its second century of existence. This is the first book devoted to the history of its first hundred years.' (144 pages)
